III.e Feuille from Carte de la Mer Mediterranée en Douze Feuilles

An important engraved and finely hand-coloured nautical chart of the Mediterranean, taken from Joseph Roux’s celebrated Carte de la Mer Mediterranée en Douze Feuilles. Roux was one of the best-known French cartographers and hydrographers of the eighteenth century. This sheet depicts the Gulf of Lion and the Gulf of Genoa, areas of great importance to the commercial and maritime navigation of the period, rendered with remarkable technical precision and notable decorative quality.

Roux’s charts are particularly admired for their balance between scientific rigour and graphic elegance: conceived as practical instruments for navigation, they are now also regarded as extraordinary testimonies to the maritime culture of the eighteenth-century Mediterranean. The vivid contemporary hand-colouring and the clarity of the engraving make this work a highly appealing collector’s piece, ideal for those seeking antique nautical charts of strong visual and historical impact.
