View of Mount Etna from Taormina, Erminio Kremp
This work is fully integrated into the production of Erminio Kremp, a painter of German origin who relocated to Palermo, and whose artistic career remained deeply influenced by Sicilian landscape painting.
In the painting in question, the compositional focus is Mount Etna, captured from the Taormina viewpoint. The perspective layout is structured around a balanced alternation of planes: the olive trees and the genre figures (macchiette) in the foreground introduce the viewer to a bucolic and contemplative atmosphere, dominated in the background by the massive presence of the volcano.
The most significant stylistic feature lies in the sfumato painterly execution: the blurring of contours into the light and the skillful use of aerial perspective expand the space, lending the scene a suspended and rarefied dimension. The painting represents a significant document of how the Sicilian landscape was received by European critics between the 19th and 20th centuries, standing out for its successful blend of topographical realism and atmospheric sensitivity.
