Ancient Theatre of Taormina

Leonhard Steiner (1836–1920)

Born and raised in Zurich, where he also passed away, Leonhard Steiner was a multifaceted figure who successfully transitioned from the heights of the industrial world to a distinguished career in the arts.

From Industry to the Arts

Steiner hailed from a wealthy family of silk industrialists. Following his father’s lead, he was initially pressured into managing the family business. However, due to significant financial losses, the firm’s Milan-based operations were shuttered around 1880.

This professional setback served as a turning point, allowing him to finally pursue his true passion: painting. He became particularly renowned for his landscape art, focusing on high-mountain scenery and naturalist compositions.

Literary Work and Family Life

His creative expression extended beyond the canvas; Steiner was also a dedicated poet and playwright. By 1884, at the age of 48, his artistic and literary output became the primary means of support for his large family of ten.
