Michele Cortigiani (Palermo, 1857 – 1925)

Among the finest interpreters of Sicilian genre painting between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Michele Cortigiani devoted much of his artistic production to scenes of everyday life on the island, capturing with remarkable sensitivity its distinctive light, traditions, and landscapes.

This elegant watercolour depicts a traditional Sicilian horse-drawn cart travelling slowly along a sunlit beach, carrying a small group of figures dressed in local costume. In the distance, sailing boats glide across the calm sea, while the expansive sky and broad stretch of sand create an atmosphere of light, space, and tranquillity, evoking the unmistakable character of the Mediterranean coastline.

The work demonstrates Cortigiani’s exceptional mastery of the watercolour medium. Delicate transparent washes, subtle tonal transitions, and a luminous palette convey the clarity of the southern light with remarkable freshness and spontaneity.
