Etna from Taormina

Carl Christian Bowedt (1889–1972) was a Swedish-Danish artist best known for his paintings of landscapes, urban scenes, and harbor views. Born in Lund, Sweden, he studied art in Copenhagen, Berlin, and Lucerne, and was also active in the United States, where he received an award from the California Art Club in 1955.

This luminous view of Taormina, dominated by the majestic presence of Mount Etna in the background, perfectly captures Carl Christian Bowedt’s sensitivity as a landscape painter. The lively coastal path, animated by figures and vibrant Mediterranean vegetation, is rendered with his unmistakable bold, impasto brushwork, which lends movement, light, and depth to the composition. The warm, vibrant atmosphere beautifully conveys the timeless charm of Sicily, one of the artist’s most cherished subjects.
