Carta geografica dell’ Isola di Sicilia, Giovanni Battista Albrizzi

Geographical map of Sicily published in Venice by Giambattista Albrizzi, first edition from the Atlante Novissimo.

Albrizzi’s maps, based on the works of Guillaume de l’Isle and Isaak Tirion, were prepared for his Atlante Novissimo, an atlas depicting all parts of the world, first published in 1740.

Giambattista Albrizzi belonged to a prominent family of Venetian printers and publishers of Bergamasque origin. The family printing business was established in the late seventeenth century by Girolamo Albrizzi and later continued by his son Giambattista, who was especially active between 1730 and 1750. He made a significant contribution to the art of Venetian printing, associating his name with a series of outstanding editions produced in collaboration with some of the finest artists and engravers of the period, including Piazzetta, Zanetti, Pitteri, and Bartolozzi.
