L’Ile De Sicile Suivant les Nouvelles Observations

Map of Sicily from the Nouvelle Théâtre du Monde, published in Amsterdam by the Dutch printer and publisher Pieter van der Aa.

The decorative border surrounding the map is a distinctive feature of all the maps included in this edition. Particularly attractive is the cartouche displaying the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Sicily, first used by the Aragonese dynasty and later adopted by the Bourbons.

On the right is a depiction of Mount Vesuvius and the Ponte della Maddalena during the eruption of 1631. On the left, Mount Etna is shown with the city of Catania during the eruption of 1669.
